Give $40 for the 40th Campaign We at the Dance Theatre of Harlem are very proud to announce that in February 2009 our institution will officially turn 40 years old. Co-founders Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook, never imagined back in 1969 exactly what four decades would look like – the challenges and the disappointments, the victories and the successes. Rather they were driven by an immediate cause. Inspired by the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., their response to the call for civil rights was to confront old prejudices about blacks being unsuited to classical dance and to create equal access and opportunity for those who might otherwise have been denied a place in the ballet world. To celebrate this incredible milestone, Dance Theatre of Harlem will mount a 15-month celebration replete with an retrospective exhibition at the New York Library for the Performing Arts, a national tour of the new Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, special performances and a host of other events. In addition, we are asking supporters, alumni, parents, students and friends to participate in a worldwide fundraising campaign to encourage new supporters to contribute $1 in recognition of each year of DTH’s 40 years. Help celebrate by giving $40 for the 40th! |
