program description:

What is ballet? Where did ballet come from? How is ballet different from or similar to other types of dance? How does one become a ballet dancer? What do ballet dancers do? What do ballet dances look like?

Combining lecture, demonstration, audience participation and live performance, Dance Theatre of Harlem’s informal presentation on the art and science of classical dance offer students of all ages an engaging, informative and fun introduction to ballet. Led by DTH Ballet Master and former company member, Keith Saunders, the DTH School Time Performance brings classical dance alive as the artists of the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble demonstrate jumping and turning, partnering and lifting, barre exercises and pointe work, otherwise known as sur le pointe, or dance that is performed on the tips of the toes. In addition to learning about ballet technique, students are also introduced to different components of dance theatre, such as lighting, costumes, live music and choreography. During an the show’s audience participation segment, the similarities between contemporary social dance and classical dance are explored, leading to the culminating performance of DTH repertoire which illustrates how all of the elements come together to create the magic of live, theatrical dance!

Firebird curriculum

Overview
Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) offers a new standards-based K-12 dance curriculum that combines DTH’s proven time-honed, ballet technique-based pedagogy with today’s progressive dance education practices. Developed in accordance with the New York City Department of Education’s Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts, the curriculum uses “Firebird,” DTH’s critically acclaimed signature ballet, as the thematic basis for the study of dance. Piloted in Spring 2008 at the PS/IS210 Twenty-first Century Academy for Community Leadership, the DTH Firebird school residency program has been implemented in five different elementary and middle school classes in upper Manhattan. Dance Theatre of Harlem is collaborating with Columbia University’s Center for Arts Education Research at Teachers College on the ongoing development and evaluation of the Firebird Curriculum.
