DANCE THEATRE OF HARLEM

COMPANY

Dance Theatre of Harlem, the unique and powerful artistic entity that brings new life to the art form of ballet returns to the world’s stages in the 2012/13 season.

The History

Founded in 1969 by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook as an affirmation of the power of art to transform, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Company—comprised at that time of African American artists barred from U.S. ballet companies because of the color of their skin—became an expression of human excellence that broke down barriers and inspired millions.

Now under the leadership of Artistic Director Virginia Johnson, former Prima Ballerina, and Executive Director Laveen Naidu, the renewed Company will offer a range of education, community engagement and audience development activities—all with signature DTH quality, excitement and artistic authority.

The Future

A lean and dynamic Dance Theatre of Harlem—streamlined for the 21st-century international touring environment— will present a repertoire comprised of DTH classics as well as cutting-edge new works that bring unprecedented relevance to classical ballet.

Along with main stage performances in major cities in the U.S. and abroad, the Company will offer a range of educational and arts engagement activities as well as seeking artistic and educational Collaborations with local dance companies, musical ensembles, college and university dance departments.
