Support Dance Theatre of Harlem

Since 1969, Dance Theatre of Harlem’s efforts to find and train talented African American and racially diverse ballet dancers have changed the landscape of the performing arts. Today, our alumni dance proudly in every corner of the world and occupy leadership positions in every sphere of community and business life.

When you invest in Dance Theatre of Harlem, you support this proud history, and you fund important school, touring, performance, and community engagement programs that last year reached 75,000 people across the United States.

As a donor, you’re part of a bright future: former prima ballerina Virginia Johnson recently succeeded co-founder Arthur Mitchell as Artistic Director, and “The Path to a Strong Future,” a five-year strategic and financial plan for 2010-2015, was developed.  Under the plan, our future efforts are organized in three areas:

NEXT GENERATION FUND: At the Dance Theatre of Harlem School, talent is the only selection criteria. Up to 65% of our participants every year are on full scholarships or receive significant financial aid. Your gift here supports continuing talent aid as well as national dancer identification programs, the School’s annual public performances, its Whole Dancer curriculum, and related dancer training initiatives.

FUND FOR ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE: Our strategic plan calls for us to return a professional performing Company to the national stage in 2013. Your gift here supports this renewal effort, as well as world premiere ballet commissions, innovative dance media and technology programs, archives preservation and national exhibits, and related artistic initiatives.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT FUND: We deliver year-round education programs in New York and New Jersey public schools where arts education is endangered by budget cuts. Your gift here supports these Firebird teaching residencies in public schools, after-school programs for at-risk youth, free family and neighborhood programs in our Harlem home, and related community engagement efforts.
